I would totally get a second cat if I had a slightly larger apartment. Tons of people have two cats. Once you venture in the 3-4 cats range, that's when cat lady status kicks in.

well, given that it's just me in an apartment that is supposed to house a Japanese family of 4 or 5 (ie, just right for a normal person), I think I'm going to do it. I'm getting a raise in April...the only issue I have now is, can I still go back to Canada for a week in March?
